The (Re)conciliation Working Group has been meeting regularly for the past year to talk about our priorities and plan our work.
Last month, we finalized our plan for three areas of activities and divided up into teams to get to work:
The Assessment Team will examine the field of conservation in Canada and identify changes needed to bring the profession into compliance with UNDRIP and the TRC recommendations. These assessments will be the basis for recommendations the group will make as a whole for changes to conservation practice in Canada, including recommendations for a review of the Code of Ethics and Guidance for Practice.
The Events Team will organize panel discussions, related workshops and recorded conversations to be presented on a regular basis (including at CAC conferences). Events will engage theoretical issues through the lens of practical problems and hands-on solutions. There will be a focus on examples of successes and failures, and everything in between.
The Online Resources Team will research, organize, and produce resources to post in an Online Resource Hub. This will become a central location for resources to help:
Support Indigenous conservators already in the field
Support Indigenous people interested in the field
Support Non-Indigenous conservators interested in unsettling their conservation practice
Provide an access point for private questions to be brought to the RWG
Respond to time sensitive issues that require critical action
Stay tuned for a workshop on Cultural Safety in the Workplace in the new year, and our second virtual CAC Conference panel discussion and in-person workshop!
